What is a vaginal ring?
Once inserted, it releases a continuous low dose of 2 kinds of female hormones which work together to prevent pregnancy. The ring functions by preventing ovulation (stopping ovaries from releasing an egg), and thickening cervical mucus so sperm can’t get into the uterus.

Frequently asked questions
You can keep a singular ring inserted for up to 3 weeks unless directed otherwise by your prescribing practitioner. If you have left it in for longer than the recommend time period, we recommend reaching out to your practitioner to provide further advice, as efficacy may be reduced.
The vaginal ring has been proven to be up to 98% effective in preventing pregnancy if it is used and inserted correctly. The vaginal ring may not work if:
- a new ring is inserted late after the 7 day ring-free period
- it is left out of the vagina for more than 3 hours during the 3 weeks that it is inserted
- you are taking other medications or natural remedies (check with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist)
If any of the above occur, or you have a change in medications or medical circumstances, please reach out to your practitioner for further advice.
The majority of women can’t feel the vaginal ring once it’s in place, although there is a chance that you’ll still be remotely aware of it.
It also may move around slightly within your vagina which is normal. However, if you do feel discomfort, the vaginal ring is probably not fully inserted. In that case, just use your finger to gently push the vaginal ring as far as you can into your vagina.
If you feel pain on insertion or you cannot find the ring once inserted, please see a medical professional as soon as possible.
Our clinical team at Kin advise that it may be possible to skip periods with this contraceptive method, however this is best discussed directly with them in your consultation or by emailing our Medical Support team at [email protected]
No, you don’t need to remove the ring during sex. If it bothers you or your partner, try moving the ring around until it feels comfortable.
If you would like to use the vaginal ring after you’ve had a baby, we would recommend that you discuss this with your health professional first so that they can provide you with next steps that best suit you.
Each order will provide 3 rings, or 3 months of contraception. Your refill will be automatically shipped to your door every 3 months so that you never run out.
Your delivery will arrive within 4-8 business days in discreet packaging. There will be an ice pack included in your delivery to ensure the rings do not go over 30 degrees in transit.
Once delivered, you must store the rings at room temperature and away from direct sunlight (below 30 degrees) and can use the rings up until the expiry date on the box, which is 4 months from the date the pharmacy dispatches. Read the storage instructions on the package, and always check the expiration date before putting in a new vaginal ring.
Once you become a Kin member, you pay a $79 annual membership fee (which works out to be $6.58 per month), plus the pharmacy price of the vaginal ring which is $129 every 3 months.
Just like your family doctor, we uphold the highest of Australian medical and prescribing standards.
Our Practitioners care a lot about you and their biggest priority is your health and safety. If the Practitioner determines that the vaginal ring is not suitable for you, a prescription will not be created.
However, our Practitioners will still provide advice about the next steps to take to ensure you get a contraceptive that is right for you. In addition, you’ll receive a full refund of your membership fee if treatment through Kin is not an option.
You’ll hear back from a Practitioner within 48 hours after signing up as a member, often sooner.
Yes. You can cancel your membership at any time. When you cancel, your membership will expire at the end of your membership year. If you have repeats of your prescription left and wish to purchase them, we can continue to ship these out to you from the pharmacy upon purchase. If you have repeats of your prescription left and do not wish to purchase them, you will not be charged.
